Moev is a synth-pop band based in Vancouver, Canada.

It was founded in the beginning of 1981, when Tom Ferris and
Cal Stephenson decided to expand upon the electronic improvisations
they created with the use of primitive and hand-made synths.
They incorporated Madeleine Morris (vocals) and Mark Jowett (guitar) in spring.

In October they released their first self-financed
12" 'Cracked Mirror' on their own small label Noetix.
This 12" was only distributed around Vancouver
and the edition was limited to a small number of copies.

In spring 1982 they finally found a label to release their records.
It was 'Go! Records' based in San Francisco.

A 12" called 'Rotting Geraniums' and the first LP 'Zimmerkampf' were released.
In the fall of 1982 Moev toured Canada and the east and west coasts of the United States.

But they were not very satisfied with this label - existing circumstances
in Canda were bad and sales of the records low. The West Coast of
Canada didn't seem to be ready for this kind of music.

After the label went broke in early 1983, the band thought that they would never
find another label releasing their music.
So they thought about founding their own label.

Band member Mark Jowett and Moev manager Terry McBride finally formed
Nettwerk Records în early 1984 solely as a vent for the release of the already
recorded 'Toulyev' 12".

Vocalist Madeleine Morris left the band before 'Toulyev' and
Cal Stephenson was now the temporary vocalist.

In November 1984 Moev also saw the release of the 12" 'Alibis'.
On both singles Christine Jones was engaged as vocalist.

Although being small Nettwerk distributed it's records globally thanks
to the international contacts all over the world. So the band and the
label got more and more popular.

The line-up changed a little bit again in the meantime:
In January 1985 Michella Arrichiello became the new singer in collaboration with Cal.

Moev continued writing and recording.
After signing an extensive deal with Profile Records of New York in September 1985,
they released their second full length album 'Dusk and Desire' in December 1985
to very favourable response in the U.S.

After this album Mark Jowett left the band to concentrate on his work
as manager of Nettwerk. Cal Stephenson went back to school and Michella Arrichiello left as well.
Anthony Valcic (just for short time), Kelly Cook (who was already a member on stage) and
Dean Russel joined the band.

Two successful twelve inches 'Wanting' and 'Capital Heaven' filled
the gap between 'Dusk and Desire' and their third full length release
'Yeah Whatever'. It sparked the interest of the major labels and was
eventually released through Atlantic Records in the US.

by Sarah McLachlan.

Band in 1990
1990: Kelly Cook, Dean Russel, Tom Ferris

The release of the 1991 album 'Obituary Column', which includes their most
successful hits in 12" versions as well as unreleased versions, seemed to
be the last release of the band.
Vocalist Dean Russel died in 1994 after suffering for a long time from a bad disease ...

Tom Ferris founded 'Econoline Crush' with Chris Meyers but left the project after the first demo
recordings due to different views of which musical directions the band should go.
He worked together with Michael Balch (ex-FLA, ex-Ministry) on the project 'Blackland'.
He also produced the first album of the Canadian band 'Waiting For God' in 1995.

At the end of 1998 he and Julie, his wife and new vocalist, decided
to re-animate the band. They began to record the songs they had written during the past years.

Kelly Cook re-joined the band. Cal Stephenson, one of the founding-members,
co-wrote some songs together with Tom.
The last member added to the line-up is Drew Maxwell of the american band Redshift
who plays the guitars.

To be continued...
